Is Egypt Safe for Tourists in 2026?

Honest Answers to Your Most Common Questions About Hurghada, Safety & Travel to Egypt

Is Egypt Safe

We want to start this blog with something important: we understand your concerns completely. Over the past months, we have been receiving more and more messages from our customers — from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and the UK — asking us the same questions:

•       Is Egypt safe right now?

•       Is there going to be a war?

•       Will it be dark in Hurghada at night — is there a blackout?

•       Is it safe to travel to Hurghada with the situation in the MiddleMiddle East?

•       Should we cancel our holiday?

We are a small family shop that has been in Hurghada for over 20 years. We live here. We work here. Our families are here. We see Hurghada every single day — not through news headlines, but through our own eyes. And we want to give you honest, calm, and clear answers to every one of these questions.

Please read this carefully. We believe it will put your mind at ease — and we hope to see you in Hurghada very soon. 😊

Everything written in this blog comes from our direct personal experience living and working in Hurghada, Egypt. We have no political agenda — we simply want to give you accurate, honest information so you can make the best decision for your holiday.

Is Egypt Safe Right Now? Is There a War?

The honest answer: No — there is no war in Egypt.

Egypt is not at war. There are no foreign armies on Egyptian soil. The country is protected and secured exclusively by the Egyptian armed forces — one of the largest and most capable military forces in the Middle East and Africa.

Egypt has maintained peace and political stability for many years. The government has made enormous investments in security infrastructure, particularly in tourist areas. The Egyptian army and police maintain a strong, visible presence in Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, Luxor, Aswan, and all major tourist destinations.

Egypt is also not strategically positioned as a target for regional military conflict. Unlike other countries in the broader region, Egypt has maintained careful diplomatic neutrality and strong international relationships — which is a major reason why it has remained one of the most stable countries in the Middle East for decades.

The Egyptian tourism industry contributes approximately 10% of the country’s total GDP and supports millions of Egyptian families directly and indirectly. The Egyptian government is deeply invested in keeping tourist areas safe, welcoming, and fully operational. This is not a small consideration — it is a national priority.

What About the Conflict in Iran and the Wider Region?

The honest answer: The situation in Iran has no direct connection to Egypt’s safety.

We completely understand why international news can create anxiety. When you watch television or read news websites, conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, and other parts of the Middle East can make the entire region feel dangerous. But it is important to understand geography and geopolitics here.

Egypt shares borders with Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and Israel/Gaza to the northeast at the Sinai Peninsula. Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, and the Red Sea coast are on the eastern side of Egypt — a significant distance from any active conflict zones, separated by vast desert, mountains, and the Suez Canal.

Iran has no shared border with Egypt and no direct military presence or interest in Egyptian tourist areas. The geopolitical situation in Iran, as serious as it may be internationally, has no operational connection to what is happening on the streets of Hurghada, in the restaurants of Sharm El-Sheikh, or on the beaches of Marsa Alam.

✅  Hurghada is approximately 1,300 km from the Gaza Strip by road

✅  The Red Sea coast is on the opposite side of Egypt from the Sinai border area

✅  Egypt has maintained strict border security and has not been drawn into any regional military conflict

✅  International travel advisories from Germany, Austria, UK, Czech Republic and Poland continue to permit tourist travel to Hurghada and Red Sea resorts

Is There an Electricity Blackout in Hurghada?

The honest answer: Tourist areas are operating completely normally.

This is one of the questions we receive most often, and we want to be very clear about it. Yes — the Egyptian government has implemented certain energy-saving measures across the country. These have included reduced lighting in some public spaces and administrative buildings, and certain restrictions on commercial electricity use during peak hours.

However — and this is the crucial point — these measures do NOT apply to tourist areas, hotels, resorts, restaurants, or entertainment venues in the same way.

What is affected by energy-saving measures:

Some street lighting in residential neighbourhoods and government buildings

Certain non-essential commercial lighting in local markets and offices

Some public buildings during off-peak hours

What is NOT affected — operating completely normally:

✅  Hotels and resorts — fully lit, air-conditioned, and operating at full capacity

✅  Restaurants and cafés — open, lit, and serving as normal

✅  Shopping centres and tourist markets — fully operational

✅  Evening entertainment, nightlife, and shows

✅  Airport operations — running normally 24 hours

✅  The beach promenade and tourist street lighting in Hurghada

✅  All tourist services including excursions, diving centres, and boat trips

We walk through central Hurghada every single day. The restaurants are full, the streets are lit, the shops are open, and tourists are enjoying their holidays exactly as they always have. If anything had changed significantly, we would tell you — because we want you to trust us.

🏖️Is Hurghada Specifically Safe?

Sheraton street, Is Egypt Safe

Sheraton street,

The honest answer: Yes — Hurghada is one of the most heavily protected tourist destinations in Egypt.

Hurghada has been a major international tourist destination for over 40 years. The city’s entire economy depends on tourism — and everyone who lives and works here knows it. This creates a powerful collective interest in keeping the city safe, welcoming, and well-maintained.

The security infrastructure in Hurghada is extensive and visible:

✅  Tourist police maintain a dedicated presence specifically to protect and assist foreign visitors

✅  Hotels and resorts have their own private security, CCTV systems, and controlled access points

✅  The main tourist areas — particularly the seafront, El Dahar, and the resort strip — are regularly patrolled

✅  Emergency response services are well-established and responsive

✅  The Hurghada International Airport has full security screening and operates international flights daily

We have welcomed customers from Germany, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the UK, Russia, and dozens of other countries into our shop for over 20 years. We have never — not once — had a customer tell us they felt unsafe in Hurghada. What we hear, consistently, is how warm, welcoming, and safe the city feels.

✈️  Should I Cancel My Holiday to Egypt?

Our honest personal opinion: No — please do not cancel.

We say this not just because we are a shop in Hurghada and we want tourists to visit — we say it because we genuinely believe the fear around travelling to Egypt right now is significantly out of proportion to the actual situation on the ground.

International news media, social media, and messaging apps can amplify fear in ways that create a distorted picture of reality. A conflict happening 1,000 kilometres away can feel like it is happening next door when you read about it online. But geography matters. Distance matters. And the actual lived experience of millions of tourists currently enjoying their holidays in Hurghada matters.

Every week, thousands of tourists from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and the UK arrive at Hurghada International Airport, check into their hotels, visit the Red Sea, go on excursions to Luxor and the pyramids, and return home safely — with wonderful memories and, often, bags full of Egyptian natural products from shops like ours! 😊

Our personal recommendation: check the official travel advisories from your own government’s foreign ministry website. These are updated regularly and give the most accurate, up-to-date assessment of safety for specific regions. For the Red Sea resort area including Hurghada, the vast majority of European foreign ministries currently classify it as a standard tourist destination with normal precautions.

What We See in Hurghada Right Now — March 2026

✅  Restaurants along the marina and seafront are full every evening

✅  The Red Sea is as beautiful as ever — diving centres and boat trips are running normally

✅  Flights are arriving and departing normally from Hurghada International Airport

✅  Our own shop is busy — we are serving customers from across Europe every day
